Youth Development

First off, all USAW Coaches are required to complete SafeSport Certification, to make sure that any kids we come into contact with are safe and protected from any form of child abuse. In addition, our owner and head coach, Jordan, has completed Darkness to Light training during his time at the Citadel.

Is It Safe?

Yes. Absolutely. There is a strange, commonly held belief that weight training is bad for kids (usually some vague connection to growth plates is made), and it is categorically untrue. Recent research clearly shows that when kids are trained correctly, focusing on form, lighter weight, and higher rep ranges; it is not only safe; but hugely beneficial. Youth athletes can even test one rep maxes in a safe manner, as long as it is preceded by a large body of technical work and general strengthening of the body as a whole.

How Often Will Practice be?

Youth practice will be held two times a week for kids currently participating in another sport, and three times a week for kids only practicing weightlifting at the time. Currently there is no set schedule for this practice, but there will be a regimented time in the future.

Should My Child Only Do Weightlifting?

Absolutely not. You should avoid specialization in sports as long as possible, only focusing on a single sport when the athlete enters college or even the pro stage. Weightlifting is a great sport by itself and a great supplement to other training programs, but it should not be the only activity your child is involved in, physically.
